Training module
Performance Evaluation
Evaluate monitoring and measurement results, interpret trends and deviations, and summarise conclusions to support management decisions
Are your monitoring and measurement results failing to provide clear, actionable insights for management decisions?
This training module builds a practical evaluation discipline that turns monitoring and measurement outputs into management review inputs, clearer decisions, and credible improvement follow-through.
Overview
What this module is about
Organizations often generate large volumes of monitoring and measurement data but struggle with consistent interpretation, leading to ambiguous insights and ineffective management decisions.
This module addresses these challenges by providing a structured approach to performance evaluation. Participants will learn to analyse monitoring and measurement results, interpret trends and deviations, and effectively summarise evaluation outputs for management decisions. The focus is on developing a practical evaluation discipline that supports clear decision-making and credible improvement initiatives, transforming raw data into actionable intelligence.
Audience
Who it is for
Management system implementers and coordinators
Executives and department heads accountable for management system performance
Those responsible for processes, policies, assets, risks and controls
Auditors seeking insight into management-side practice, not audit technique
Consultants working on management system design, governance or improvement
Decision supportIs this module for you?
It is a good fit if you…
work with performance results but struggle to interpret what they mean.
face reports full of numbers but little shared understanding.
need to distinguish signal from noise and explain deviations.
support management review, evaluation, or improvement decisions.
want performance evaluation that leads to action, not just reporting.
It may not be the best fit if you…
already operate a clear, consistent performance evaluation discipline.
have no mandate or interest in interpreting or summarising results.
need KPI design, monitoring system setup, or analytics tooling.
are looking for audit execution or corrective action techniques.
Agenda
What is taught
9 parts01Role of performance evaluation in management systems
How performance evaluation builds on monitoring and measurement by focusing on meaning, significance, and decision relevance, and where common failure modes such as overload, defensiveness, and false precision reduce its value
02Preparing evaluation inputs
How to consolidate monitoring and measurement results from multiple sources and apply basic comparability checks across definitions, time windows, baselines, and scaling
03Reading trends, deviations, and patterns
How to recognise practical patterns such as trends, spikes, plateaus, and recurring variation, and identify triggers that warrant deeper investigation
04Building credible interpretations
How to separate observation, interpretation, and implication, and assess confidence and uncertainty by distinguishing what is known from what is assumed
05Evaluating what is working and what is not
How to use performance evidence to assess process stability and control operation at management level, and recognise when indicators no longer support decision-making
06Synthesising multiple inputs into an integrated picture
How to combine monitoring and measurement results with audit outputs, incidents, and feedback without cherry-picking, and apply consistency checks across conflicting or lagging and leading signals
07Communicating evaluation outputs for leadership use
How to prepare management-ready summaries that move from situation to interpretation, implication, and decision input, and avoid dashboard overload and overly technical narratives
08From evaluation outputs to improvement inputs
How to translate evaluation summaries into actionable improvement inputs and follow-up questions, and define what evidence would demonstrate improvement over time
09Case-based workshop
Applying the learned concepts, methods, and approaches in a realistic case setting
Outcomes
Learning outcomes
01
Analyze performance results to identify key trends and deviations
02
Interpret monitoring and measurement results to derive actionable insights for management decisions
03
Summarize evaluation outputs effectively for various stakeholders and management review inputs
Distinguish between different types of performance indicators and their implications for evaluation
Develop a systematic approach to performance evaluation that supports continuous improvement
Identify and address common pitfalls in performance evaluation, such as data misinterpretation or biased reporting
Materials
The content and the assessment
Written module
The full content in writing, complete in itself. Videos are recorded for parts of it as an alternative way through, and the written module always carries everything.
Exercises
Graded work on the case organisation's own registers: structured answers checked against the encoded case, written answers scored against a rubric traced to it, with a trainer holding the final word on every assessed item.
On completion
The assessed exercises must be passed before the certificate is issued.
Scheduling
No public run of Performance Evaluation is scheduled at the moment. Tell us you are interested and we will let you know when the next one opens, or discuss running it in-house.

Case organisation
You work inside a company that already has the problem
Exercises run on one case organisation, carried across modules rather than restarted, so what you build here is what the next module finds.
Northstar Integrated Services AG is a group headquartered in Zurich, providing digital operations platforms and managed services to regulated organisations across Europe. It has not always been that. It began in 2008 as a field-operations firm of about twenty-five people, and what first forced documented decisions and named accountability on it was not growth but a single regulated customer. It now runs an acquired business in Poland and the Czech Republic through a subsidiary that kept its own legal identity, which is where the interesting failures live: group instruments rolled out operationally and never put in force by the governing bodies of the subsidiary itself.
Linked registers
Organisation and people, risks, objectives, policies and documents, findings and reviews, third parties, processes
Not a case study
Nothing is summarised for you; the evidence is where it would really be
It has a history
The organisation has a timeline, and modules enter it at different points, so a structure can be studied before it broke as well as after
It crosses borders
A Swiss parent, an acquired operating business in Poland and the Czech Republic under its own legal entity, and customers in several jurisdictions
Why it matters
Judgement is not trained on tidy examples, and it is not trained on a fresh one each week. Northstar is deliberately untidy, and modules enter it at different points of its history, so you see a governance structure being built, outgrown and rebuilt rather than a finished one. What you decide in one module is what the next one finds.
Delivery & dates
